The grizzly (Ursus arctos horribilis) is the inland subspecies of the brown bear and now lives mainly in Alaska, western Canada and the Rocky Mountains. The muscular hump over the shoulders powers front claws up to ten centimetres long, used for digging out roots and hauling ground squirrels from a hillside. Three quarters of the diet is plant matter: berries, tubers and grasses, rounded out with insect larvae, salmon and carrion. Before the winter rest a bear puts on a third of its own body weight, then spends up to six months in a den it has dug itself. The cubs are born there in January, barely larger than a guinea pig.
Did you know that a grizzly can smell a salmon carcass several kilometres away? The scenting membrane inside its nose offers many times the area of a tracking dog's, and in open country the bear works the wind methodically. It finds its food long before there is anything to see.
