Along its expressive movable mouth is a graceful sweep of soft baleen fringe for stories from the deep.
The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) owes its scientific name to its pectoral fins, since Megaptera means big-winged. They reach up to a third of the body length and are the longest limbs of any animal. Instead of teeth, plates of baleen hang from the upper jaw and sieve krill and shoaling fish from the water. In bubble-net feeding, several whales spiral upwards and close a shoal inside a curtain of air bubbles. Between polar waters and warm calving grounds, humpbacks travel five to eight thousand kilometres each year.
Did you know that humpback whales take their songs from one another? Every male in a population sings the same sequence of phrases, and that sequence shifts over the course of a season. In the South Pacific, researchers watched a new song pass from one population to the next and replace the old one completely within a few months.
