Folkmanis Gull Hand Puppet

Found both at sea and on land, the inquisitive Folkmanis Gull Hand Puppet lands ready to forage a snack. Bring this bird's quirky personality to life with a movable beak and flappable wings.

Gulls (Laridae) number around fifty species and settle along coasts, estuaries and, in recent decades, towns far inland. The menu runs to fish, shellfish, crabs, insects, carrion and whatever the harbour leaves behind. Salt glands above the eyes draw surplus salt from the blood and release it through the nostrils, which is why gulls can drink seawater. Hard shells are dropped onto rocks from the air until they split open. Breeding takes place in colonies where neighbours stick together noisily.

Did you know that gulls drum their feet on wet grass to imitate falling rain? Earthworms rise to the surface and are gathered up one by one. Working with herring gulls, the ethologist Niko Tinbergen also showed that chicks peck at the red spot on a parent's beak, and that this single signal sets the begging in motion.
