A magnificent mollusc, the Folkmanis giant clam Hand Puppet is a deep sea diver's dream come true! Inside the lovely and textural shell, behold the bounty of the sea. With four fingers, operate the clam shell and eyes to uncover a rare pearl tucked away safely inside. This extraordinary puppet is the most fun you will ever have with shellfish!
The giant clam (Tridacna gigas) is the largest bivalve in the world, growing beyond a metre across and past two hundred kilograms. It grows up on a coral reef in the Indo-Pacific and, once mature, never moves again. Feeding works two ways: it filters plankton from the water and houses algae in its brilliantly coloured mantle, which make sugar from sunlight on its behalf. Hundreds of tiny light-sensing organs sit in that mantle, registering a passing shadow and closing the shell.
Did you know that the largest pearl known to us came from a giant clam? It weighs more than thirty kilograms, was found off the Philippines and shows no pearly lustre at all, but a matt, porcelain-like surface instead.
