Feathery tan and grey plush mimic the soft, silent feathers of the screech owl puppet so realistically that they almost camouflage this woodland creature. With the hidden rod, turn his head to fix his watchful eyes on you!
Screech owls (genus Megascops) are small owls of North and Central America and hold their territory all year round. They nest in tree cavities, often in holes abandoned by woodpeckers, and hunt from a perch for moths, beetles, mice and small birds. The call is no screech at all but a descending whinny and a long, even trill that carries far through the night woods. An owl that feels watched stretches tall and thin, raises its feather tufts and all but disappears against the bark. The glide stays silent because the leading edges of the flight feathers are finely fringed.
Did you know that screech owls come in two colour forms? Some birds are grey, others rusty red, and both can hatch from the same clutch. Which form predominates depends on the region: red birds are commoner in the damp forests of the south-east, grey ones further north.
