Hook and loop tabs on the front and back feet allow the baby sloth to hang onto anything. What is your hurry! This two-toed baby sloth puppet is taking it easy and wants to be carried everywhere with you. This fascinating creature comes from the rainforest but can saunter right into your heart.
Two-toed sloths (genus Choloepus) live in the rainforests of Central and South America and spend almost their entire lives suspended in the branches. Long curved claws hook over a limb, so sleeping, feeding and giving birth all happen in the same position. Leaves, buds and fruit yield so little energy that the metabolism runs at half speed and a single meal takes weeks to digest. Young sloths cling to their mother's belly for months, learning as they go which leaves are worth eating. Unlike their three-toed relatives, two-toed sloths are mainly active after dark.
Did you know that a sloth's coat is a habitat in its own right? Green algae grow in the grooved hairs, lending the animal a greenish cast and useful camouflage, and whole species of moth live on those algae in turn. More than a hundred moths have been counted in the coat of a single sloth.
