The great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) is the most widespread owl in the Americas, breeding from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. Its ear openings sit asymmetrically on the skull, so a sound reaches one ear a fraction of a second before the other, which tells the bird how high the source lies.
