The Valais Blacknose Sheep is an unmistakable breed with a white woolly coat and black nose, eyes, ears, knees and feet. This endearing lamb of a Folkmanis Hand Puppet has a movable mouth for storytelling of mountainous proportions.
The breed comes from the Swiss canton of Valais, where it has been documented since the fifteenth century. Rams and ewes alike carry horns, curling outwards and backwards in wide spirals. The long, coarse fleece grows all year round and covers the body and legs down to the fetlocks. These sheep climb steep rock faces with confidence and graze grasses and herbs that other breeds can barely reach. They are kept for their wool and for their meat alike.
Did you know that the Valais Blacknose received a breed standard of its own only in 1962? Until then it rarely left its home valleys. Today it is bred worldwide and is widely called the cutest sheep in the world, a reputation that has brought the breed more demand than any quality of its fleece.
