This puppet is a real head-turner! Besides being able to make his head turn 360°, you can animate this snowy owl’s feather-soft wings to create a real flap in your neck of the woods!
The snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) breeds on the open tundra of North America, Scandinavia and Siberia, where trees are absent and the ground stays frozen for much of the year. Its wingspan runs from 125 to 146 centimetres, and it weighs between 1.6 and just over three kilograms depending on sex. Females are larger and more heavily barred than the almost pure-white males. It builds its nest as a simple shallow scrape on raised ground, giving it a clear view over the surrounding tundra. Clutch size depends heavily on food supply and can range from three eggs to more than ten – in poor lemming years the owl may skip breeding altogether. Thick feathering that reaches down over its toes keeps out the Arctic cold.
Did you know that snowy owls can hunt almost around the clock during the Arctic summer months, as the sun shines nearly 24 hours a day in these regions? These fascinating owls take advantage of the perpetual daylight to effectively hunt their prey, primarily lemmings.
