Soft striped fur and wiggly whiskers adorn this orange tabby kitten. Animate the legs and head of this kitten puppet to make her pounce and preen. But be careful, she’ll hold onto whatever she can grab and that might just be you!
The domestic cat (Felis catus) descends from the African wildcat (Felis lybica) and was domesticated around 9,000 to 10,000 years ago in the Middle East. From there it spread first around the Mediterranean and eventually, with people, to almost every region of the world. Even as a pet, the cat remains a strict carnivore, needing animal protein that, unlike a dog, it cannot replace with plant food. Feral domestic cats hunt mainly mice, small birds and insects. A kitten is weaned between six and eight weeks old and begins eating solid food on its own soon after.
Did you know that orange tabby kittens inherit their striped pattern genetically? Exactly how it falls across the coat is settled in the womb, though – which is why no kitten wears quite the same stripes and swirls as its littermates.
