The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) lives in the high mountains of Central Asia, from the Himalaya across the Pamir to the Altai, often above the tree line. It hunts blue sheep, ibex and marmots, covering many kilometres of rocky ground in a single night. The tail is almost as long as the body, balances every leap and is laid over the muzzle as a scarf during sleep. Broad, densely furred paws work like snowshoes and carry the animal over loose snowfields. Cubs are born blind and stay with their mother for close to two years.
Did you know that a snow leopard cannot roar? The build of its larynx does not allow it. As a greeting it gives a soft puffing sound instead, known to specialists as chuffing, which tigers also use in friendly contact.
