The Barred Rock is a colour variety of the Plymouth Rock, a breed that arose in New England from the American Dominique and black Asiatic hens and was first shown in 1869. Domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) descend from the red junglefowl of South-East Asia and live by a clear rank order, the original pecking order. Grain, greens, worms and insects all count as food, which is why the flock spends its day scratching through the soil. A rooster keeps watch, using different alarm calls for hawks overhead and for danger on the ground, and summons the hens whenever he finds something to eat. The barred pattern comes from a gene that interrupts pigment deposition rhythmically as each feather grows.
Did you know that a rooster does not wait for daylight before he crows? Researchers in Japan kept roosters under constant lighting and found that the birds still began some two hours before their usual dawn. An internal clock sets the rhythm; daylight merely corrects it.
