Folkmanis Piglet Hand Puppet

With its sweet smiling face and curlicue tail, this piglet puppet is all yours to sing along with your favourite barnyard tunes, zip-line through the forest, or snuggle in your arms.

The domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) descends from the wild boar, and a litter usually numbers ten to fourteen piglets. Within days of birth each piglet claims a particular teat and returns to that one for every feed. The snout disc is stiffened by a bone of its own and packed with touch receptors, which is how piglets lever roots, fungi and grubs out of the soil. Their sense of smell outdoes that of many dog breeds, which is why pigs have been taken truffle hunting in France for centuries. Among themselves they use more than twenty distinguishable calls, from a soft contact grunt to a shrill squeal.

Did you know that a sow calls her piglets in to nurse? She lies on her side and grunts in a steady rhythm that quickens towards the end. Only then does the milk flow, and only for some twenty seconds. Latecomers get nothing, which is why the litter comes running at the very first grunt.
