The American black bear (Ursus americanus) is North America's most common bear species, with an estimated population above 800,000, and it lives in forests from Alaska down to Mexico. Adult males weigh between 60 and around 300 kilograms depending on the region and reach head-body lengths of 1.2 to 2 metres. As omnivores, their diet includes berries, nuts, roots, insects and occasionally carrion or small vertebrates, though plant food usually makes up the greater share. In winter, many populations retreat into dens or hollows for several months of dormancy, from which females emerge with newborn cubs.
Did you know that black bears are excellent climbers and begin climbing trees as cubs to escape dangers or find food? This skill starts at a very young age.
