The lion (Panthera leo) today lives mainly in the savannah and open dry country of sub-Saharan Africa, with a small surviving population in India's Gir Forest. Unlike most big cats, it often hunts in a pride, with lionesses making most of the kills. Large hoofed animals such as wildebeest, zebra and buffalo make up most of its diet, along with the occasional scavenged carcass. After a successful hunt, an adult lion can eat up to 30 kilograms of meat in one sitting and then go without food for days. Males can weigh up to 250 kilograms, considerably more than the leaner lionesses.
