Zebras (genus Equus) range across the savannahs and grasslands of eastern and southern Africa. They feed on tough, fibrous grasses that other grazers leave alone, which means a daily walk to the waterhole. A family consists of one stallion, several mares and their foals, and these groups gather into far larger assemblies. A foal is on its feet within an hour of birth and follows its mother. When danger appears the herd stays together, and attackers meet a powerful kick from the hind legs.
Did you know that the stripes mainly keep horseflies away? In trials with striped coats placed over horses, the insects failed to land cleanly and veered off just before touchdown. Since horseflies carry dangerous diseases in Africa, that is a solid advantage.
