Blue and purple plumage, a red comb, a yellow beak and a walk like a catwalk: the Sir Theo von Gockel Hand Puppet by Living Puppets takes himself pleasantly seriously. According to the maker's story he descends from old country gentry and devotes himself to his garden, his wife and his noble duties — a premise that carries a puppet scene straight away. Sir Theo suits scenes where someone makes a grand entrance and then turns meek, and fits projects about farms and livestock. His stately build means he also reads well in front of a larger group.
The beak works on the fold-open principle. The hand opening sits on the underside and your arm runs up through the neck of the figure, so the neck can be moved and Sir Theo can stretch, look around and dart forward.
The domestic rooster, Gallus gallus domesticus, descends from the red junglefowl of South-East Asia. He is larger and heavier than the hen and carries a markedly bigger comb, along with long hackle feathers and sickle-shaped tail feathers. Comb and wattles help release heat and also signal the bird's condition. Crowing marks the territory, and within the group the rooster takes a leading position. Chickens live to around five to seven years.
Did you know that a rooster calls his hens when he has found food? He clucks in a distinctive tone and pecks conspicuously at the ground until the group arrives. Some roosters use the call even when there is no food at all — though the hens see through the trick in time.
