Hansa Creation — soft toys that mirror the real animal
What sets Hansa Creation apart is obvious the moment you see one of their animals: they look strikingly like the real thing. Fur texture, markings and posture are all modelled on living creatures. The artists in Hansa's studio work from photographs taken in natural habitats and translate what they see into fabric. The company was founded in 1972 by Hans Axthelm in Melbourne, Australia. Since 1994, production has taken place in the Philippines, where a dedicated team of artisans crafts every single animal by hand.
How a Hansa soft toy is made
Each creation begins with a portrait of the real animal. From this, the design team develops a pattern that captures the animal's proportions and characteristic posture. Around 42 individual fabric pieces — considerably more for larger animals — are cut by hand. Sewing follows the inside-out method: the pieces are joined from the inside and then turned, so that seams are virtually invisible in the finished toy. Airbrush artists then add shading, spots or stripes to the fur. Eyes, whiskers and claws are selected from a pool of over 6,000 different components, combined to suit each species.
Materials and sustainability
Hansa Creation uses specially developed synthetic furs, matched in texture and colour to each animal. Since 2011, the filling in every toy has been made entirely from fibres derived from recycled PET bottles. The production process itself also conserves resources: collected rainwater has been used in manufacturing since 1994. All animals are laboratory-tested and meet the European EN 71 safety standard for toys.
Use in education and therapy
Many nurseries, schools and therapeutic settings use Hansa soft toys as practical tools. In circle time or science lessons, the lifelike animals help children grasp facts about species and habitats in a tangible way. A child can pick up a plush animal and immediately see whether it has claws, a bushy tail or an upright stance. In speech therapy and elderly care, these animals serve as conversation starters — a familiar creature such as a rabbit or a cat can unlock memories and help reach people who might otherwise withdraw.
Every animal tells a story
Hansa Creation follows a clear philosophy: Conservation + Education = Preservation. Each animal carries an information tag describing the real species' habitat, behaviour and diet. The idea is straightforward — those who know an animal are more likely to protect it. Hansa partners with museums, conservation organisations and educational institutions to this end. The range includes over 7,000 different species: from woodland animals native to Europe to African savannah dwellers, marine life and insects.
Caring for your plush toy
Hansa plush animals can be cleaned with a soft cloth, mild soap and warm water. Once dry, the fur can be gently brushed so it sits naturally again. Machine washing is not recommended, as it may affect the airbrushed details and the toy's shape.
