With a head-to-body length of around 30 cm and an equally long bushy tail, it is somewhat larger than the European red squirrel. Its fur ranges from light silver-grey to dark charcoal, with a white underside. Unlike its European cousin, the grey squirrel lacks the characteristic ear tufts. It feeds on seeds, buds, bark and fungi, though it occasionally eats insects or bird eggs as well.

Did you know that grey squirrels are accomplished deceivers? When they sense they are being watched, they dig a hole and pretend to bury a nut — but secretly keep the food tucked away in their cheeks. This way, they deliberately mislead competitors searching for an easy meal. Each season, they create several thousand such caches and actually manage to relocate most of them. The forgotten nuts germinate in spring, helping to spread trees across the landscape.
