The European hare (Lepus europaeus) inhabits open and semi-open landscapes from steppe to farmland. With a head-to-body length of up to 68 cm and a weight of 3.5 to 5 kilograms, it is considerably larger than the wild rabbit. Its grey-brown coat provides camouflage in the field, and its long hind legs allow leaps of up to two metres in height. During the day, hares rest in shallow depressions called forms, only becoming active at dusk. Their eyes sit so far to the sides of the head that they can survey nearly 360 degrees without turning — a vital advantage for spotting predators early.

Did you know that European hares are among the fastest mammals in Europe? Over short distances they reach speeds of up to 70 km/h, zigzagging sharply to throw off pursuing foxes and dogs. In spring, hares can be seen standing on their hind legs and striking each other with their front paws — a behaviour known as boxing. These are usually females fending off persistent males, a spectacle that earned the species its reputation as the "Mad March Hare" in English folklore.
