Small cats (Felinae) give birth in well-hidden shelters: hollow trunks, the hollow beneath the roots of a fallen tree, a crack in the rocks. For the first few days the kittens are blind and deaf, and only after a good week do the eyes open. Their spotted baby coat breaks up the outline in the dappled light of the undergrowth and makes them hard for birds of prey to spot. If the shelter becomes unsafe, the mother carries them one by one by the scruff, and from about six weeks she brings them their first prey. What looks like romping is the whole hunting repertoire in miniature: the stalk, the paw strike, the pounce from behind.
Did you know that nearly every kitten opens its eyes on a blue iris? The final colour appears only once pigment settles in, which takes anything from a few weeks to several months. Only then does the amber or greenish yellow of the adult wild cat come through.
