The quokka (Setonix brachyurus) is a small wallaby about the size of a house cat, and it survives almost entirely on two islands off the coast of Western Australia. On the mainland, introduced foxes and cats have reduced it to a few scattered pockets. It sleeps through the day in dense scrub and comes out in the evening to feed on leaves, grasses, bark and seedlings. Like every kangaroo it travels by hopping, though it will climb into low bushes when the browsing is better up there. A female raises a single young, which stays in the pouch for roughly half a year.
Did you know that the quokka's island owes its name to a mistake? When the Dutch captain Willem de Vlamingh landed there in 1696, he took the many small marsupials for rats and called the place Rottnest, meaning rat's nest. The name stuck, although the animal is neither a rat nor any relation of one.
