Being cold-blooded, they regulate their temperature by moving between sunny spots and shade. Their diet ranges from insects and snails to fruit and small vertebrates. The size range is considerable, from geckos a few centimetres long to the Komodo dragon.

When shedding it, the animal breaks along a prepared fracture plane in a vertebra, and the twitching remnant holds the attacker's attention. What grows back is a rod of cartilage without vertebrae, and it cannot be shed again at the same point.
