A sweet sea creature, the Folkmanis mini manatee finger puppet with movable mouth is the tiniest sea cow you may ever see.
Fine tactile hairs cover a manatee from nose to tail, several thousand of them. They register currents and pressure waves and fill in what the eyes cannot make out in murky water. Around the mouth the hairs grow thickest, and the animal uses them to feel which plant it has found. Its molars travel slowly forward through the jaw throughout its life, because grit in the sea grass wears them down.
Did you know that manatees were once taken for mermaids? Off Hispaniola in 1493 Columbus recorded three sirens, adding that they were nowhere near as lovely as the stories had promised. The order they belong to is still called Sirenia.
