No ordinary quacker, the Folkmanis duck Hand Puppet is simply wonderful. Soft and squishy, this iconic white waterfowl is ideal for cuddly storytelling with a movable beak to captivate the imagination.
Like almost every domestic breed, the white farmyard duck descends from the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), tamed in Asia some 4,000 years ago. It dabbles in shallow water for pondweed, snails and insect larvae, sieving them out through fine lamellae along the edge of the bill. Webbed feet work as paddles, and oil from the preen gland keeps the plumage watertight. Only the female gives the loud quack, while the drake manages a hoarse rasp.
Did you know that ducklings follow the first moving thing they see after hatching? Konrad Lorenz called this imprinting and was famously trailed by whole broods of ducks and geese. The window for it closes within a few hours.
