Hansa Creation Hand Puppets — animals that tell stories
What sets a Hansa Creation hand puppet apart from an ordinary soft toy becomes clear the moment you play with it: slip your hand inside, move the head and front legs, and the animal comes alive. A wolf turns its head, a parrot spreads its wings, a fox sniffs along the ground. This range of movement turns Hansa hand puppets into a tool that goes well beyond simple cuddling.
Over 50 species in the collection
The range covers animals from nearly every habitat. African wildlife such as lion, elephant and hippo sit alongside European woodland species including fox, badger and owl. Primates — gorilla, chimpanzee and orang-utan among them — feature just as prominently as domestic animals: cats, dogs of various breeds and rabbits. For children fascinated by prehistory, a dedicated line of dinosaur hand puppets includes T-Rex, Triceratops and Spinosaurus. Birds such as cockatoo, barn owl and emu complete the offering.
Handmade following the Hansa method
Every hand puppet is made using the same process as Hansa's plush animals. The design team works from photographs of the animal in its natural habitat. Fabrics are cut individually and sewn using the inside-out technique — seams sit on the inside and are barely visible on the finished toy. Airbrush artists then apply shading and colour gradients to the fur. Eyes, whiskers and claws are selected from a pool of over 6,000 components. Since 2011, the filling has been made entirely from recycled PET fibres.
In nurseries and schools
Educators use hand puppets to make topics tangible for children. An animal that moves and "speaks" holds attention more firmly than a picture or a static figure. In nature lessons, Hansa hand puppets can illustrate habitats and animal behaviour: how does a wolf hunt in a pack? Why are owls nocturnal? During circle time, the puppet takes on its own role — greeting children, asking questions or telling a story. Children often speak more freely to a hand puppet than directly to an adult.
In speech therapy and elderly care
Speech therapists use hand puppets as targeted tools in language development. Children with delayed speech often respond more openly to an animal looking at them and moving its mouth than to direct conversation. They practise sounds, name body parts or tell the animal a story — inhibitions drop because the puppet is not an adult. In elderly care and dementia support, familiar animals trigger memories. A dog, a cat or a rabbit on the hand can start conversations that might not happen otherwise.
Quality and safety
All Hansa hand puppets are laboratory-tested and meet the European EN 71 toy safety standard. The recommended age is 3 years and above. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, allow the fur to dry, then brush gently if needed. Machine washing should be avoided as the airbrushed details are delicate.
Choosing the right puppet
For use with younger children, compact hand puppets around 25 cm work best as they fit small hands comfortably. Larger models up to 50 cm make more of an impact on stage or in puppet theatre. If the puppet is for classroom use, pick an animal that matches the current topic — woodland project, farm animals or dinosaurs. For therapy, animals familiar to children tend to work best: dogs, cats, rabbits.
