The European red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) lives in deciduous and coniferous forests, building spherical nests called dreys. It feeds on nuts, seeds, buds and occasionally insects. In autumn, it stores provisions that it later retrieves using its keen sense of smell. Squirrels can leap up to five metres.
