From the mountains of Tibet comes the legendary Yeti, also known as the Abominable Snowman in western culture. The Folkmanis Yeti Hand Puppet is a playful version of this mythical monster with snowy white fur, two-handed gloves for added animation plus movable eyebrows and mouth for expressive storytelling fun.
In Sherpa tradition across the Himalayas the creature is called yeh-teh, roughly the animal of the rocky place. It is held to be shy, immensely strong and keen to avoid people, and herders still blame it for missing yaks. The western name arrived in 1921, when a journalist mistranslated a phrase from an expedition report. Footprints in the snow have drawn search parties ever since.
Did you know that many famous Yeti tracks have a plain explanation? A footprint melting at the edges in mountain sun grows within hours into something enormous. Hair samples kept in monasteries and caves have, on analysis, all come from familiar animals, most often bears.
