The earliest accounts of a one-horned animal come from antiquity: around 400 BC the Greek physician Ctesias described a wild ass from India carrying a single horn. Medieval Europe took the creature into its bestiaries, where it became a figure of purity — impossible for hunters to take, gentle only in the lap of a maiden. That same imagery gave Scotland its heraldic unicorn, shown in chains since the fifteenth century because nothing else was thought able to hold it. Only in modern children’s books did the shy woodland beast turn into the friendly companion every child now recognises.
