Folkmanis Skunk Hand Puppet

White stripes sweep along the long black fur of this skunk right to the hazardous hindquarters. Lift the bushy tail of the Folkmanis skunk Hand Puppet and she takes up her attack position, with mouth and tail both under your control. Do not worry: scent glands are not included.

The striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) lives across much of North America, from woodland edges to suburban front gardens. It forages at night, digging out grubs with strong claws and taking mice, eggs, fruit and insects besides. Long before it sprays, it gives warning: it stamps its front paws, hisses and raises its tail straight up. Only if that fails does it release its scent, accurately and over several metres. Refilling the supply then takes a good week, which explains why the animal is so sparing with it.

Did you know that a bird is the skunk's most persistent enemy? Great horned owls take them regularly, because owls have little sense of smell and pay no attention to the display. Four-legged predators learn the black and white pattern after one encounter and keep their distance from then on.
