The pink fairy armadillo (Chlamyphorus truncatus) lives on the sandy plains of central Argentina and spends almost its whole life below ground. Powerful digging claws on the forelegs drive it through loose soil, and it packs the spoil down with its flattened rear plate. Ants, grubs, worms and plant matter are taken as it tunnels. The shell is only loosely attached to the back and is threaded with blood vessels through which the animal sheds or holds warmth. It is the smallest armadillo in the world, smaller than a human hand.
Did you know that nobody yet knows how many pink fairy armadillos are out there? They stay hidden in the sand, and even seasoned field workers usually find only digging marks. Most of what science knows comes from a handful of encounters and night-time photographs.
