Inspired by the kangaroo mouse in the sci-fi epic Dune, the quirky Folkmanis Jerboa Hand Puppet appears ready for action. This amazing jumping rodent from the grasslands and deserts of Northern Africa and Asia has oversized ears, long legs and a long tail. Its three-finger design sends the unusual creature hopping through every story.
Jerboas (Dipodidae) live across the drylands that stretch from North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula into Central Asia. Around 33 species are known, and all of them travel on two hind legs, using the long tufted tail as a balancing pole. By day they rest in self-dug tunnels, and several species seal the entrance with sand so the moisture stays inside. At night they search for seeds, succulent plant parts and insects. Drinking is barely necessary, because their kidneys are so efficient that the water in their food is enough.
Did you know that the jerboa family includes the mammal with the largest ears relative to its body? The long-eared jerboa of the Gobi Desert has ears reaching roughly two thirds of its head and body length. They sharpen its hearing and also shed body heat, which counts for a great deal in a landscape without shade.
