It is designed with brilliant ombre body printing, hanging elements, vinyl accents, plush flames and a movable head, with an ashen tail that wraps around your wrist with a magnetic clasp.
The phoenix began in Egypt. At Heliopolis people honoured the Bennu heron, said to have risen from the primeval mound at the first sunrise. Herodotus carried the story to Greece in the fifth century BC. He describes a bird that appears once every 500 years and bears the remains of its predecessor to the temple of the sun. Burning in its own nest was a later addition, and the early Christian Physiologus turned the whole image into a figure of resurrection.
Did you know that the Russian firebird is a quite different creature from the phoenix? The Zhar-ptitsa of folk tales does not burn but glows: a single feather lights a whole hall, and whoever finds one gains as much trouble as good fortune. Igor Stravinsky made the figure famous worldwide with his 1910 ballet The Firebird.
