Monarchs (Danaus plexippus) lay their eggs on milkweed and on nothing else. The caterpillar takes in the plant’s bitter compounds without harm and keeps them for life, which makes the adult butterfly a thoroughly unpleasant meal. Each autumn the butterflies leave Canada and the northern United States for the mountain forests of central Mexico, gathering in their thousands in the same stands of fir.
Did you know that the butterflies wintering in Mexico have never seen the place before? Three or four short-lived summer generations separate them from the last travellers, yet they settle in the very same groves. How they find their way there is still not fully explained.
