Symbolic and meaningful in many cultures, the Folkmanis mini dragonfly Finger Puppet captures the ethereal spirit of this extraordinary insect and traces its flight path across any table from a single finger.
Dragonflies (Odonata) spend the greater part of their lives underwater. As larvae they lie in wait in the mud and weed of ponds and streams, for anything from a few months to five years depending on the species. Prey is seized with the labial mask, a hinged lower lip that shoots forward in an instant. At the end of its larval life the nymph climbs a stem out of the water, its skin splits, and the finished flyer emerges. As an adult a dragonfly often lives just a few weeks, hunting midges and flies on the wing.
Did you know that dragonflies rank among the most successful hunters in the animal world? Studies of hawker dragonflies recorded success in more than ninety per cent of attempted strikes, whereas a lion barely manages a quarter. Compound eyes built from tens of thousands of lenses and four independently moving wings make it possible.
