Also known as pillbug or potato bug, the Folkmanis mini roly poly Finger Puppet is a fun little friend with big eyes. Its exoskeleton plates curl up with a movement of your finger.
Roly polies are not insects but crustaceans: the common pill woodlouse (Armadillidium vulgare) sits closer to the prawn and the lobster than to any beetle. It carries seven pairs of legs and breathes through pale organs on the underside of its rear body, which only work while damp. That is why it spends the day under leaf litter, bark and stones and grows lively at dusk. Its meals are dead leaves and rotting wood, which it grinds down into soil.
Did you know that a woodlouse moults in two stages? The rear half of the shell comes away first, the front half several days later. In between the animal looks two-toned, one half still wearing the older, darker casing.
