The Folkmanis mini wood duck Finger Puppet is the male of the species with crested head and beautifully bold, true to life markings. Worn on a single finger, it goes anywhere, from the kitchen table to the waiting room.
The wood duck (Aix sponsa) breeds in the deciduous woodlands of North America, always close to quiet water. Unlike most ducks it perches in trees, gripping the wood with strong claws on its toes. For a nest it uses a tree cavity, often several metres above the ground. Acorns, seeds, water plants and insects make up the diet. In breeding plumage the drake wears a crest shot through with green and violet and a finely pencilled breast. The female stays a plain grey-brown, camouflage for her weeks inside the nest hole.
Did you know that wood duck ducklings leap from the nest hole the day after hatching? The mother calls from below, and the balls of down drop from as high as fifteen metres. Weighing almost nothing and landing on soft leaf litter, they arrive unhurt and follow her straight to the water.
