Folkmanis Mini Rosy Maple Moth Finger Puppet

Smallest of the silk moths from North America, the vividly colourful Folkmanis mini rosy maple moth Finger Puppet has big friendly eyes and a fuzzy body. Its wings shade from pink into yellow, and perched on a fingertip it flutters through any story.

The rosy maple moth (Dryocampa rubicunda) is on the wing from May to August in the deciduous woods of the eastern United States and southern Canada. Its caterpillars feed on maple, occasionally oak, and carry longitudinal green stripes on a pale ground. To pupate they drop to the ground and burrow into the leaf litter. The adults fly at night and spend the day resting under leaves with their wings folded back. Pink and yellow look conspicuous, yet among blossom and dead leaves those colours break up the outline.

Did you know that the adult rosy maple moth eats nothing at all? It has no working proboscis and lives entirely off the reserves laid down by the caterpillar, surviving only a few days. In that short window it has one task, which is to find a mate.
