The sweet-and-gentle fawn Hand Puppet is adorably designed, from its soft vinyl nose down to its vinyl hooves. Big black eyes and silky spotted fabric fur details complete the realism of this hand puppet.
Many members of the deer family (Cervidae) produce young in a spotted coat, among them the roe deer of Europe and the white-tailed deer of North America. White dots on a red-brown ground break up the outline of the body wherever sunlight falls through the canopy. A fawn spends its first weeks lying motionless in tall grass while its mother grazes nearby and returns only to suckle. After that it follows her along the trails and begins to take herbs, buds and young shoots alongside her milk. The spots fade with the first moult, and the winter coat that follows is a plain greyish brown.
Did you know that a newborn fawn is almost impossible to smell? Its skin gives off next to no scent in the first days, so a fox may pass within a step of it and notice nothing. To leave no trace at the resting place either, the mother licks away its droppings and urine and keeps her own distance.
