The fluffy fleeced alpaca stage puppet has sweet and gentle features set off by woolly super-soft plush and wise eyes that say, I don't need a jumper! The long body lets you work the puppet with your whole forearm.
The alpaca (Vicugna pacos) comes from the high Andes and grazes in Peru, Bolivia and Chile at altitudes between 3,500 and 4,500 metres. It is the tamed form of the wild vicuña and has been kept for some six thousand years for its fleece alone. As a member of the camel family it carries no hump, but soft padded soles that leave the thin turf of the puna intact. Its split upper lip nips off single blades of grass rather than tearing them out by the root. Within the herd the animals keep in touch through a quiet humming that holds mothers and crias together across open ground.
Did you know that alpaca fleece was reserved for the nobility under Inca rule? Anyone outside the upper ranks was forbidden to wear or even own the finest grades. After the Spanish conquest the herds collapsed so far that the animals survived only in the highest and most remote valleys.
