The Grandmother: a Punch and Judy hand puppet from munabo's ART series. The Grandmother hand puppet wears a bonnet with a white frill, round spectacles and a dark floral dress. The kindly face with its three lines across the forehead is artistically hand-painted, the soft fabric head embroidered and shaped by hand, so every grandmother looks a little different. The figure is light, made for children's and adults' hands alike, and comes from a Czech workshop where Punch and Judy figures are made by hand.
Grandmother is the still point the play sets out from and returns to. She sends Kasper off shopping, she is the first to notice the cake is missing, and at the end she has coffee ready for everyone. Because she stays at home while the others are out, she often speaks straight into the audience in the middle of a scene. She asks, “Have you seen Kasper anywhere?” and the children answer her as they would a real grandma. That makes her a rewarding character for a first attempt at playing.
Did you know that the grandmother in Little Red Riding Hood has not always survived? In Charles Perrault's version of 1697 the wolf eats grandmother and granddaughter, and the tale ends there. In the Brothers Grimm's version of 1812, by contrast, a huntsman frees them both from the wolf's belly, a rescue Ludwig Tieck had already told in 1800. The rescued grandmother has been part of the story ever since, and she arrived on the puppet stage as the character nothing can happen to any more.
