The Kasper: a Punch and Judy hand puppet from munabo's ART series. The Kasper hand puppet – the German cousin of Mr Punch – wears a costume in a bright diamond pattern and a red pointed cap with a bell. Below the cap sits a laughing face with a big nose and red cheeks. That face is handcrafted: the soft fabric head is embroidered, shaped and artistically painted by hand in a traditional craft workshop in the Czech Republic. The figure is light and fits children's and adults' hands alike.
Kasper is the hero of the play and its link to the audience at the same time. He speaks to the children directly, asks their advice and then does as he pleases anyway. That double role, protagonist and spokesman to the audience in one, sets him apart from every other character. In the country where he is made he is called Kašpárek. On the touring puppet stages of the nineteenth century he was the resident comic with the same job: pulling the audience into the play.
Did you know that the diamond pattern gives away where Kasper comes from? It goes back to Harlequin of the Italian commedia dell'arte, whose costume began as a patchwork of coloured patches and settled into a regular diamond pattern in the seventeenth century. Harlequin, Hanswurst and Kasperl are stages of the same figure, the comic servant of popular theatre. The actor Johann La Roche made Kasperl famous at Vienna's Leopoldstadt theatre from 1781.
