Hummingbirds (Trochilidae) occur only in the Americas, from southern Alaska down to Tierra del Fuego. The ruby throat belongs to the ruby-throated hummingbird, the sole species breeding east of the Mississippi. Flower nectar is the staple food, with small insects and spiders taken as a source of protein. In hovering flight the wings trace a figure of eight, which is why hummingbirds alone among birds can also fly backwards. The nest is a tiny cup of plant down bound with spider silk, and it stretches as the chicks grow.
Did you know that hummingbirds drop into a state of torpor at night? Body temperature and heartbeat fall sharply, because otherwise their metabolism would burn every reserve before morning. Coming out of it can take the bird up to an hour before it takes off again.
