One figure always causes a stir in Punch and Judy theatre: the crocodile that steals the sausages. The Sterntaler crocodile hand puppet is green, with button eyes and a row of white fabric teeth in its red mouth. It belongs to the established cast alongside Punch, Grandmother and the Robber of the German Kasperle stage. With its movable mouth, the crocodile snatches the sausages whenever Punch looks away.
Africa’s largest crocodile is the Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus). Adults commonly reach three to four metres, males weigh 225 to 750 kilograms, and lengths of up to 6.5 metres have been recorded in rare instances. The jaws hold 64 to 68 pointed, cone-shaped teeth. The diet is mostly fish – in Kenya’s Lake Turkana, fish make up around 90 per cent of it. The female lays 16 to 80 eggs in a hole she digs herself a few metres from the water, and guards the nest until hatching.
Did you know that young crocodiles call out before they hatch? After 84 to 89 days in the nest they make frog-like sounds, and the mother then digs the clutch free. She goes on protecting the hatchlings through their first months of life – parental care few people expect from a reptile.
