The Folkmanis axolotl puppet is a fascinating freshwater salamander with feathery pink gills, soulful eyes and movable head and tail. Recently a viral social media meme, this adorable yet endangered creature will inspire your natural curiosity.
In the wild the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) survives only in the canals of Xochimilco on the edge of Mexico City, all that remains of a much larger lake. It feeds on aquatic insects, worms and small crustaceans, snapping its mouth open so fast that prey is drawn in with the rush of water. It does have teeth, but they serve to grip rather than to chew. Polluted water and introduced fish have left the wild population in serious trouble, even as tens of thousands live on in laboratories and home aquaria.
Did you know that the name axolotl comes from Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs? It points to Xolotl, god of the evening twilight, who according to legend turned himself into a water salamander to escape his fate. The name is usually rendered as water monster.
