That is why growers and gardeners are glad to see them. When threatened they release a yellow, bitter-tasting fluid from their leg joints that puts birds off. The spots never change during a beetle's life, so they say nothing about its age. From one beetle to the next the number varies a great deal: in the harlequin ladybird it runs from none to nineteen.
Did you know that ladybirds spend the winter in company? They gather in their thousands in rock crevices, leaf piles and window frames. In California, convergent lady beetles return every winter to the same mountain sites and gather there in their hundreds of thousands.
