Folkmanis Griffin Hand Puppet

Folkmanis brings a legend of mythical proportions to life. All herald the chimeric Griffin: part eagle, with a fierce movable beak, hypnotic eyes, expansive movable wings and large talons. These are poised on a lion body of strong rear legs and long tufted tail. Imagine your own story with this fantastic beast!

The griffin has haunted the art of the ancient Near East and the Aegean for some four and a half thousand years. It appears on Minoan frescoes and Assyrian reliefs, and reached medieval Europe by way of Greece. Herodotus describes griffins guarding gold in the far north of Scythia and doing battle with the one-eyed Arimaspians. Made up of the king of birds and the king of beasts, the creature lays claim to sky and earth at once. Heraldry took it up as a sign of watchful strength, and it still appears in civic arms from Rostock to Perugia. Anyone staging a guardian who is neither dragon nor knight will find their leading player here.

Did you know that griffin claws were traded across medieval Europe? Church treasuries kept them as prized possessions, crediting them with the power to reveal poisoned drink. They were in fact the horns of ibex and wild cattle, while the coveted griffin eggs were ostrich eggs brought up from Africa.
