The blue-footed booby is a standout in nature, with brightly coloured feet it shows off in a comical dance during the mating season. Its name comes from the Spanish word bobo, meaning silly or foolish. These coastal seabirds of South America are tame around people yet oblivious to other dangers. The blue-footed booby (Sula nebouxii) breeds on rocky coasts and islands from the Gulf of California down to Peru, with about half the population on the Galápagos. To fish, it climbs high, folds its wings back and hits the water at over eighty kilometres an hour. Air pockets under the skin of the head cushion the impact. Sardines, mackerel and flying fish make up the catch, often taken by dozens of birds plunging at once. The nest is a bare scrape, marked out by a ring of droppings.
