Clown - hand puppet for babies by Sterntaler
Sterntaler baby hand puppet clown, orange pointed hat, red nose, yellow bow tie and a navy jacket
Of all the characters on stage, one may get everything wrong and still win applause instead of blame: the clown. The clown hand puppet by Sterntaler is instantly recognisable as a circus character, with its round red nose and the stars on its cheeks. A head that wobbles or an arm that shoots up at the wrong moment is part of the act, not a mistake.
Circus tradition recognises two basic clown types, and their contrast still carries almost every act today. The whiteface clown is elegantly made up and claims authority; his counterpart, the clumsy Auguste, undercuts it with every mishap. One sets the rule, the other breaks it, and the audience’s laughter grows out of that exchange. The Sterntaler figure is not tied to either type: sometimes the clown disrupts order, sometimes he keeps it.
Did you know that clowns can have their face registered? Since 1946, the make-up of individual clowns in Britain has been painted onto eggs and collected in a register, now looked after by Clowns International. The idea is that no clown copies another’s face.
