The Robber: a Punch and Judy hand puppet from munabo's ART series. The Robber hand puppet wears a brown slouch hat, a red checked neckerchief and a stubbly beard on a scowling face. Every robber's face is artistically hand-painted; the soft fabric head is embroidered and shaped by hand, so every robber glowers a little differently. The light figure suits children's and adults' hands and is made in a traditional craft workshop in the Czech Republic.
The robber is the villain children understand at once. Unlike the devil or the wizard he needs no magic; he simply takes what is not his, the Sunday roast, the treasure, the princess. That is exactly why children know where they stand with him, and hold their breath when someone sets a trap for him. At the end he is caught, tied up or reformed. Through him the play shows that wrongdoing does not pay in the long run, and does so without a word of explanation.
Did you know that the most famous robber in children's literature comes straight from the cast of the puppet stage? Otfried Preußler gave his 1962 book The Robber Hotzenplotz the subtitle A Kasperl Story and filled it with Kasperl, Seppel, Grandmother and her coffee mill. By his own account he wanted something cheerful while work on a heavy subject was stuck, and reached for the figures every child already knew from the puppet stage.
